Which Red Ants Pants Are Right for You? OWP vs. GSD Women's Work Pants
Not all workdays look the same. And neither should all work pants. Some days call for heavyweight canvas that can take a serious beating. Others call for something lighter, cooler, and a little stretchier. That’s exactly why we offer two different styles of women’s work pants: our Original Work Pants (OWPs) and our GSD (Get Stuff Done) Pants. Both were designed with working women in mind, and both offer functional pockets, reinforced construction, multiple fit and inseam options, and plenty of room to move. But they were built for different kinds of days. So, OWPs or GSDs? Here’s how to decide. Choose the Original Work Pants If Durability Is Your #1 Priority Our Original Work Pants are exactly that: the pants that started it all. Made in the USA from 12 oz, 100% cotton canvas (which is grown and milled right here in the USA), these are our toughest women’s work pants. They feature double-front construction, reinforced seams, deep functional pockets, and a gusseted crotch that gives you room to bend, squat, climb, and move aka keep you comfortable. The heavyweight cotton canvas is especially well suited for demanding work where your clothing takes some abuse. Think ranching, farming, construction, landscaping, trail work, woodworking, gardening, and long days spent outside. One thing to know about 100% cotton canvas: your OWPs are meant to be broken in. They’ll feel structured when you first pull them out of the package and will shrink approximately 3–5% with washing, which we account for in our sizing. As you wash and wear them, the canvas begins to soften and conform to you. These aren't pants designed to feel worn-in on day one. They're pants designed to become worn-in after years of use. Choose the OWPs if you want: Our heaviest-duty work pant 12 oz, 100% cotton canvas Double-front construction Maximum durability A structured pant that breaks in with wear USA-made workwear Pants built for demanding, high-wear jobs One more important difference to know about our OWPs: they’re made in the USA. Keeping our OWPs made here at home is something that has been important to Red Ants Pants from the beginning, and we’re proud to continue offering a USA-made option for customers who value having something locally made. We also want to be transparent about what that means for price. Making pants entirely in the USA is expensive. Domestic labor and manufacturing costs are higher, and that is reflected in the price of our OWPs. Pair that with heavyweight 12 oz cotton canvas and construction designed for years of wear, and these pants are an investment upfront (but one that is worth it). For some women, buying USA-made workwear is a priority and worth that additional cost. For others, price is a bigger factor and we understand that, too. In fact, that’s part of why we’re so excited to offer the GSDs as another option. Which brings us to our second option: OUR GET SHIT DONE PANTS !!! Choose the GSD Pants If You Want Something Lighter With Stretch Sometimes you don't need your heaviest work pants. You need something that can move. Enter the GSDs: Get Shit Done Pants (or “stuff” if you prefer). The GSDs are made from 10 oz canvas with 98% cotton and 2% spandex, giving you a lighter work pant with a little stretch built in. That makes them a great choice for warmer weather, long days with lots of movement, or women who simply prefer a softer, more flexible work pant. They still have the things we refuse to compromise on: deep functional pockets, reinforced seams, thoughtful fit, and construction designed for women who actually work in their clothes. What they don't have is the double-front knee of the OWPs. That helps make the GSD a lighter alternative when you don't need quite as much reinforcement. They're also currently available in Olive and Wine, giving you a little more color than our iconic brown OWPs. Choose the GSDs if you want: A lighter-weight women's work pant 10 oz canvas 2% stretch for easier movement A good option for warmer weather A more flexible feel Single-front construction Color options Work pants that easily transition beyond the workday OWP vs. GSD: What's the Biggest Difference? The easiest way to think about it is this: OWP = maximum durability and reinforcement. GSD = lighter weight and more flexibility. If you're hard on the knees of your pants, regularly working around rough materials, or simply want the most durable pair we make, we'd steer you toward the OWPs. If your work involves plenty of movement, you're working in warmer conditions, or you prefer a little stretch in your clothing, we'd start with the GSDs. And for a lot of women, the answer might eventually be both. Your heavyweight OWPs can handle the days when you need maximum durability, while your GSDs become the pair you grab when it's hot outside or you want something lighter and stretchier. Both Are Actually Designed for Women's Bodies Whichever fabric you choose, you shouldn't have to settle when it comes to fit. Both our OWPs and GSDs are available in Straight and Curvy fits, because women aren't all built the same. Our Straight Fit provides a more uniform fit through the hips and thighs and works well for women who don't typically experience waistband gapping. Our Curvy Fit provides more room through the hips and seat with a closer fit at the waist and can be a better option if you've experienced that dreaded waistband gap in other pants. Both styles are also offered in three inseam lengths: Short (30–31"), Regular (32–33"), and Long (34–35"), with sizing options designed to fit a wide range of women's bodies. Before You Pick, Grab a Measuring Tape Whichever pant you choose, please don’t guess your size or automatically order the size you typically wear in another brand. Women’s sizing varies significantly from brand to brand, and our OWPs and GSDs have their own fit and sizing specifications. We strongly recommend taking a few minutes to take your current measurements and complete our Fit Finder quiz. Even if you think you know your size, fresh measurements matter. The Fit Finder uses those measurements along with information about your body shape and fit preferences to help determine not only your RAP size, but whether Straight or Curvy is likely to work best for your body. This is especially important with our 100% cotton canvas OWPs, which are intentionally sized to account for the shrinkage that happens during the first wash. A brand-new pair may not fit exactly the way you expect straight out of the package, and that's by design. So, Which Women's Work Pants Should You Buy? Start with your actual workday. Choose the Original Work Pants when durability, reinforcement, and longevity are at the top of your list. Choose the GSD Pants when you want lightweight women's work pants with stretch, flexibility, and a little more versatility. Neither is meant to be the "better" work pant. They're two answers to something we've understood since Red Ants Pants began 20 years ago: Women do all kinds of work. We shouldn't expect one pair of pants to do it all. And we definitely shouldn't expect women to make men's work pants work for us.

The Sustainability Conversation: Our Original Work Pant
When we talk about sustainability in the apparel industry, there’s a lot to consider. We can talk about sustainable materials—where they come from, how they’re produced, and what happens to them once a garment is worn out and discarded. We can talk about manufacturing processes, including the carbon footprint of producing and transporting a garment. We can talk about the people who make our clothes: Are they paid fair, living wages? Do they work in safe environments? Are they treated with dignity and respect? And we can talk about something that has become increasingly important in the fashion industry: how much clothing we make, and how quickly we make it. By now, most people are familiar with the environmental problems associated with fast fashion—overproduction, excessive waste, disposable clothing, and a system built around constantly convincing consumers that they need something new. At Red Ants Pants, we’ve always done things a little differently. Workwear, Not Fast Fashion Red Ants Pants was founded by working women in the trades. The idea was never to start a fashion line… we wanted to make work pants for women that fit properly, function in demanding environments, and that last more than one field season. That philosophy still guides the brand today. We don't follow the traditional fashion calendar, releasing dozens of new styles and colors every season. In fact, we’ve been making the same original work pants for 20 years. Occasionally, we introduce a new fabric or color, but we are intentional about how much we produce. There’s a simple reason for that: Once you accomplish the monumentally complicated task of designing women’s workwear that actually fits women’s dynamic bodies, and then build a product and manufacturing system around making that garment durable, comfortable, and functional - you don’t need to constantly replace it with something new. Some of our customers have been wearing the same pair of Red Ants Pants for a decade. To us, slow fashion looks like making fewer things, making them well, and creating products that people genuinely want to keep wearing for years. Durability Is a Form of Sustainability One of the most sustainable garments is often the one you already own. We believe durability and longevity are essential parts of sustainable clothing. A pair of work pants that can withstand years of hard use, repeated washing, and demanding work is fundamentally different from a garment designed to be worn a handful of times before it is replaced. There's something inherently sustainable about buying one excellent pair of work pants and wearing them for years. Sustainable Manufacturing Isn't Easy—or Cheap We want to be transparent about something: manufacturing clothing in a way that meets our quality standards and aligns with our values is not easy, and it is not cheap. There are tradeoffs. Our original work pants are made from 100% US grown cotton canvas. The fabric is made in Georgia and then travels to Michigan to be cut and sewn into pants before making its way to Montana, where our small distribution warehouse and storefront in White Sulphur Springs is located. That is not an insignificant amount of transportation…but there is an important distinction: Our supply chain for the Original Work Pants is domestic. The materials are not being shipped back and forth across oceans at multiple stages of production. Keeping production closer to home not only reduces the transportation associated with a globally distributed supply chain, but also allows us to maintain closer relationships with the people and businesses involved in making our products. Why We Choose 100% Cotton Canvas Material choice is another important part of the sustainability conversation. Our original work pants are made from 100% cotton canvas, a natural fiber that is well suited to durable workwear. Cotton canvas is tough, comfortable, and designed to stand up to years of use. Once these pants have no life left, once they are faded, thread-bare, and have been worked to the bone… because they are made entirely of cotton which is a natural fiber - they will break down over time and return to the earth. This is a stark distinction from performance pants made of polyester or synthetic blends that shed microplastics and microfibers during washing and throughout their lifespan. Those particles can make their way into waterways and ecosystems, where they persist in the environment. Making Less. Making It Better. Wearing It Longer. For us, sustainability isn't about claiming that every decision we make is perfect - It’s about asking better questions. Can we make clothing that lasts longer? Can we avoid unnecessary overproduction? Can we work with manufacturing partners who share our values? Can we choose materials thoughtfully? Can we make products that people will wear for years instead of replacing them every season? These questions have shaped Red Ants Pants from the beginning. We are a small and simple workwear brand that makes a relatively small number of products, and we don't believe in making something new just for the sake of making something new. From Classroom to Worksite: Lessons from a Textile Collaboration
The middle of Montana and the eastern edge of Louisiana may seem worlds apart, but when it comes to equipping women with gear that can keep up with them, we found common ground through a recent partnership with students in Louisiana State University’s textile and manufacturing program. For most of modern history, women in the trades have been asked to adapt - to tools, to job sites, and especially to gear that was never designed with them in mind. Ill-fitting workwear isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s a barrier to safety, performance, and belonging. At Red Ants Pants, we started with a simple premise: women deserve better. Increasingly, the next generation of designers is stepping up to meet that challenge with fresh thinking and real innovation. The timing couldn’t be more important. Women are one of the fastest-growing segments in construction, agriculture, and manufacturing. Yet the market has been slow to respond. For too long, “women’s workwear” meant smaller sizes and different colors, not a fundamentally different approach to design. Broader economic trends - what some have called the “She-conomy” - underscore the influence women now have as workers, consumers, and innovators. But real progress depends on more than demand; it requires people willing to rethink the status quo. That’s where education and industry partnerships come in. When students design for real customers with real needs, they learn how to identify gaps and build solutions from the ground up. They also learn something AI can’t replicate: the discipline of making a product that works in the real world. Materials have limits. Construction matters. The difference between a good idea and a great product is often invisible on paper but obvious in practice. One standout student design proved that point: an urban-inspired collection that still performed on a ranch, moving seamlessly from field to town without sacrificing function. On Leadership and Murmurations
On Leadership and Murmurations In a recent conversation with a wise friend of mine, David James Duncan, he brought up murmurations. He and Barry Lopez, another phenomenal writer shared similar reflections about how humanity should perhaps take some pointers from sandpipers. Have you ever seen a murmuration of birds? Where hundreds, sometimes even thousands of birds are in flight, and they shift collectively in waves of black across the sky. It is one of life’s great amazements. The instantaneous communication, the seamless ease and flow as if one greater organism. I have seen this phenomenon up in the Bay of Fundy, eastern Canada. Where tens of thousands of semipalmated sandpipers migrate through and stop to feed on the mud flats before their four-day, nonstop flight to Argentina. It is usually a peregrine falcon that comes torpedoing through a resting flock on shore that sends it into a murmuration. It is truly something to behold. From Barry Lopez, “The flock is carving open space up into the most complex geometrical volumes, and you have to ask yourself, How do they do that? The answer is, No one’s giving anyone else instructions. You look to the four or five birds immediately around you. You coordinate with them. The intricacy of that lattice means that one of the birds you’re using as a guide for your own maneuverings is itself watching the birds around it to coordinate its movements. There’s no leader. David and Barry’s suggestion caught and challenged my thinking on leadership. At the Red Ants Pants Foundation, we spend a lot of time and effort programming around leadership, specifically for teenage girls. But if we don’t need one leader, what do we need? Instead of one leader, what if we all had leadership skills? Instead of following one we could work with our neighbors towards a common direction of good? How do that many birds stay in tune with each other determining their direction and movements so rapidly? They seem to know each other, predict each other’s movements, they communicate effectively. They know their roles and what needs to be done. At our Red Ants Pants Foundation Girls Leadership Program, we teach different mind styles, communication styles, and leadership styles. We can have loud leaders and quiet leaders. Calm leaders and exuberant leaders, analytical leaders and creative leaders. We learn about different identities and about our own limiting beliefs. We think about our own fundamental values and what we believe in; how these values affect our place in the world. By the end of the year, we have all learned a lot about each other, and even more importantly, about ourselves. What if we all were a little more self-aware? What if we all took a little more responsibility with our leadership? What if all our leaders led with a little more compassion and curiosity? And truly looked to our neighbors, to the birds flying to our left and to our right to see how they are doing? Who can we take a little lift from and help them carry the load? Who needs a quick turn of protection from a predator? And so, it does seem we could learn from the sandpipers. And we can also learn from one another. We will keep working towards more leadership skills for all, and especially for girls and women. Onward. Calhoun’s 2021 Festival Welcome
Well, hello there! It’s really wonderful to be able to welcome you back to our favorite cow pasture, in person, together at last. We gather here to enjoy the good company of our friends and neighbors, to celebrate that we made it through a very tough chapter of our lives, and to celebrate our 10th year anniversary of enjoying live music together. We have much to be thankful for. A friend recently posed this question: “How are you making time for things that matter?” I was on a Smith River trip thinking about this and had lots of time to gaze up at the canyon walls to contemplate the things that truly matter. Family, rivers, community, my dog, leaving this world a little better than we found it, and of course, music. Photo by Eric Heidle How can we describe the value of music in our lives? What is it about songs that can help us heal? Music allows us to access the emotional side of ourselves that we don’t often make time to let in. It lets us feel deeply and perhaps most importantly, reminds us that we are not alone. Hearing about someone else’s experiences of hardship or joy invites us to reflect on our relationship both with ourselves and with others. It invites us to think about our place and purpose in this world. I posed this same question to several friends: “What is the value of music?” One particularly insightful 10-year-old named Willa summed it up well, “Music makes everything better. Like when I fight with my brother, all we have to do is put on our favorite song, and bam…we love each other again.” Music reminds us to be joyful, to dance! It says things we don’t know how to put into words. It steadies our souls. Music is the story that captures what it means to be alive. So here we are, gathered together to hear the songs that move us. As day slips into dusk, and the big Montana sky envelops our collective experience with grace and so much beauty, please take a moment to look around at these smiling faces. Let’s embrace this, and each other. Let’s lead with all the love we can possibly muster. Let’s take care of one another the best we know how. On Giving
This past week, we spent time selecting gifts from our beautifully stocked Red Ants Pants shelves for some folks who need a little extra joy this holiday season. In November, we asked our customers for suggestions of people they knew who had an especially tough year. The responses came pouring in. And I assure you, there has not been a dry eye in the place. Some of you lost your homes and all your belongings in wildfires. We understand that nothing can replace a home, but perhaps a new pair of pants and a carpenter pencil will give you some strength to start rebuilding. There are stories of single moms losing their jobs, of husbands serving overseas, of isolated elderly neighbors. There is a mom who has to drive her 12-year-old son across state lines five times a week for cancer treatments. We can’t cure your son, but a hoodie and some strong coffee may bring some warmth to your early mornings. But, perhaps most remarkable, were the Red Ants Pants customers who responded to our query by sending additional support in the form of donations, their own gift contributions, and even by returning pants they outgrew to pass along to someone else who can use them. Giving is contagious. There is no doubt that people are hurting out there. But we’re seeing an awful lot of love, too. And kindness. And joy…even if we have to look a little harder for it this year.
