The Sustainability Conversation: Our Original Work Pant

When we talk about sustainability in the apparel industry, there’s a lot to consider.

We can talk about sustainable materials—where they come from, how they’re produced, and what happens to them once a garment is worn out and discarded. We can talk about manufacturing processes, including the carbon footprint of producing and transporting a garment. We can talk about the people who make our clothes: Are they paid fair, living wages? Do they work in safe environments? Are they treated with dignity and respect?

And we can talk about something that has become increasingly important in the fashion industry: how much clothing we make, and how quickly we make it.

By now, most people are familiar with the environmental problems associated with fast fashion—overproduction, excessive waste, disposable clothing, and a system built around constantly convincing consumers that they need something new.

At Red Ants Pants, we’ve always done things a little differently.

Workwear, Not Fast Fashion

Red Ants Pants   was founded by   working women in the trades. The idea was never to start a fashion line… we wanted to make work pants for women that fit properly, function in demanding environments, and that last more than one field season.  That philosophy still guides the brand today.

We don't follow the traditional fashion calendar, releasing dozens of new styles and colors every season. In fact, we’ve been making the same original work pants for 20 years. Occasionally, we introduce a new fabric or color, but we are intentional about how much we produce. 

There’s a simple reason for that: Once you accomplish the monumentally complicated task of designing women’s workwear that actually fits women’s dynamic bodies, and then build a product and manufacturing system around making that garment durable, comfortable, and functional - you don’t need to constantly replace it with something new. Some of our customers have been wearing the same pair of Red Ants Pants for a decade.

To us, slow fashion looks like making fewer things, making them well, and creating products that people genuinely want to keep wearing for years.

Durability Is a Form of Sustainability

One of the most sustainable garments is often the one you already own.

We believe durability and longevity are essential parts of sustainable clothing. A pair of work pants that can withstand years of hard use, repeated washing, and demanding work is fundamentally different from a garment designed to be worn a handful of times before it is replaced.  There's something inherently sustainable about buying one excellent pair of work pants and wearing them for years.

Sustainable Manufacturing Isn't Easy—or Cheap

We want to be transparent about something: manufacturing clothing in a way that meets our quality standards and aligns with our values is not easy, and it is not cheap.

There are tradeoffs.

Our original work pants are made from 100% US grown cotton canvas. The fabric is made in Georgia and then travels to Michigan to be cut and sewn into pants before making its way to Montana, where our small distribution warehouse and storefront in White Sulphur Springs is located.  That is not an insignificant amount of transportation…but there is an important distinction: Our supply chain for the Original Work Pants is domestic. The materials are not being shipped back and forth across oceans at multiple stages of production.

Keeping production closer to home not only reduces the transportation associated with a globally distributed supply chain, but also allows us to maintain closer relationships with the people and businesses involved in making our products.

Why We Choose 100% Cotton Canvas

Material choice is another important part of the sustainability conversation.  Our original work pants are made from 100% cotton canvas, a natural fiber that is well suited to durable workwear. Cotton canvas is tough, comfortable, and designed to stand up to years of use.

Once these pants have no life left, once they are faded, thread-bare, and have been worked to the bone… because they are made entirely of cotton which is a natural fiber - they will break down over time and return to the earth.  This is a stark distinction from performance pants made of polyester or synthetic blends that shed microplastics and microfibers during washing and throughout their lifespan. Those particles can make their way into waterways and ecosystems, where they persist in the environment.

 Making Less. Making It Better. Wearing It Longer.

For us, sustainability isn't about claiming that every decision we make is perfect - It’s about asking better questions.

Can we make clothing that lasts longer? Can we avoid unnecessary overproduction? Can we work with manufacturing partners who share our values? Can we choose materials thoughtfully? Can we make products that people will wear for years instead of replacing them every season?

These questions have shaped Red Ants Pants from the beginning.

We are a small and simple workwear brand that makes a relatively small number of products, and we don't believe in making something new just for the sake of making something new.  We believe in durable women's workwear, thoughtful manufacturing, responsible production, and clothes built to last.

And maybe the most sustainable thing about a pair of Red Ants Pants isn't any single material, factory, or production decision.  Maybe it's the fact that you can put them on, go to work, and keep wearing the same pair for years.

That's the kind of sustainability we can get behind.

If you've ever worn through the knees of a pair of work pants long before the rest of the pants were ready to retire, you already understand the idea behind double-knee work pants. Workwear takes a beating. And for women who spend their days kneeling, climbing, crouching, hauling, fixing, building, farming, ranching, gardening, or simply getting things done outside, the knees are often one of the first places that wear begins to show. That's why our Original Work Pants don't just have reinforced knees. They're built with double-front construction designed to add another layer of durability where hardworking women often need it most. But the double front is really only one piece of the story. Our Original Work Pants were created because our founder couldn't find women's work pants that gave her the durability, function, and fit she needed. Twenty years later, we're still building them around the same idea: women deserve workwear that's actually designed for the work they're doing. Why Were Red Ants Pants Created in the First Place? Before there was Red Ants Pants, there was a woman trying to find a decent pair of work pants. Our founder, Sarah Calhoun, was working with Outward Bound and doing physically demanding outdoor work. The problem? When she went looking for durable work pants, the options available to her were overwhelmingly designed for men. So, like many women  did, she tried wearing men's pants. And like many women, that didn’t work out. Sure they were durable enough, but they weren't designed for her body. The fit was wrong (just ask the duct tape she used to help repair them). The function wasn't quite right (again ask the duct tape, it was witness). And eventually she started asking a pretty simple question: Why wasn't anyone making serious work pants specifically for women? Sarah began reaching out to workwear companies asking them to make them. No one was interested, but one company did suggested she do it herself. So she did. Red Ants Pants was founded in 2006, and the Original Work Pants became the product that started it all: durable women's work pants designed from the beginning with women and their work in mind. What Are Double Knee Work Pants? Despite the name, double-knee work pants don't mean you're walking around with twice as much pant everywhere. The concept is pretty simple: add an additional layer of fabric over a high-wear area of the pant. For our Original Work Pants, that reinforcement extends across the front of the legs, creating our signature double-front construction. Why? Because knees take abuse. If you spend your day kneeling in the garden, crouching on a jobsite, repairing fence, working livestock, stacking materials, landscaping, woodworking, doing trail work, or tackling projects around your property, your pants are repeatedly rubbing against rough surfaces. That additional layer gives you more material between your body, your work, and eventually a hole in your pants. Who Actually Needs Double Knee Work Pants? Not everyone does. If your workday is primarily indoors or your clothing doesn't experience much abrasion, a lighter-weight work pant may make more sense. But double-front work pants can be particularly useful for women who are hard on their clothing. Think: Farmers and ranchers who are constantly climbing, kneeling, fixing fence, working around livestock, and moving through rough environments. Construction workers and tradeswomen whose knees and legs regularly come into contact with concrete, lumber, equipment, and other abrasive surfaces. Landscapers and gardeners who spend a significant amount of time kneeling or working close to the ground. Trail crews and outdoor professionals who need clothing that can handle brush, dirt, rocks, and long days outside. DIYers and property owners who may not technically call it their "job" but somehow still spend every weekend fixing, building, planting, hauling, or repairing something. You don't have to work in a traditional trade to need durable workwear. If you're consistently wearing through the front or knees of your pants, double-front construction is probably worth considering. Why Fabric Matters Just as Much as the Double Knee Adding another layer of flimsy fabric doesn't magically create durable work pants. The fabric itself matters. Our Original Work Pants are made from heavyweight 12 oz, 100% cotton canvas. We chose canvas because it's substantial, durable, and made to stand up to hard use. And yes, you'll notice it when you first put them on. Brand-new OWPs can feel stiff compared with stretchy everyday pants. That's not something we try to hide. In fact, it's part of what makes these pants what they are. They're designed to break in rather than break down. As you wash, wear, bend, work, and live in them, the cotton canvas begins to soften and conform to you. We have women in our Anthill who have been wearing their Red Ants Pants for 10, 12, even 15+ years. Their pants aren't pristine. They're faded, softened, patched, stained, and completely their own. And we're pretty proud of that. Double Fronts Are Great. But Your Pants Still Need to Move There's an obvious problem with making work pants tougher: You still have to be able to work in them. Durability doesn't mean much if you can't comfortably squat down, climb into a truck, step over a fence, or bend over without fighting your pants. That's why the Original Work Pants also feature a gusseted crotch. Instead of relying on a traditional four-seam intersection at the crotch, a gusset adds fabric and room through an area that needs to move with your body. Pair that with reinforced seams and thoughtful construction, and you get a pant that's designed not just to survive work, but to let you actually do it. And Yes, We Take Pockets Very Seriously If you've spent any amount of time wearing women's clothing, you probably don't need us to explain the pocket problem. Tiny pockets. Fake pockets. Shallow pockets. Pockets that technically exist but can't hold a phone without ejecting it the second you sit down. No thanks. Our Original Work Pants have deep, functional pockets because the women wearing them actually need to carry things. Tools. Phones. Gloves. Fence staples. Pocket knives. Snacks. Whatever your particular workday requires. It's a small detail until you've worked all day in pants without them. Then it's a very big detail. Women's Work Pants Should Actually Fit Women This is perhaps the most important part of the Original Work Pants story. We didn't take a pair of men's work pants, make them smaller, and call them women's. They were designed for women's bodies from the beginning. Today, our Original Work Pants (OWPs) are offered in Straight and Curvy fits to accommodate different proportions through the waist, hips, and seat. We also offer three inseams: Short, Regular, and Long, because women aren't all the same height either. And our sizing runs from 0–24. All of those choices exist for one reason: there is no single shape called "woman." And Remember Before You Order: Please Don't Guess Your Size This part is important. Women's sizing varies dramatically between brands, so please don't automatically order your normal size in Red Ants Pants. Before ordering your OWPs, grab a measuring tape, take your current measurements, and complete our Fit Finder quiz. Even if you're certain you know your size. The Fit Finder uses your measurements and body proportions to help determine both your RAP size and whether our Straight or Curvy fit is likely to work better for you. This is particularly important with the Original Work Pants because they're made from 100% cotton canvas and are intentionally sized to account for shrinkage during the first wash. Your brand-new pair may initially feel a little roomier than you expect. That's by design. Measure first. Take the Fit Finder. Then order. Those few extra minutes can make a big difference in getting the fit right. Made in the USA, and Why That Matters to the Price Our Original Work Pants are also made in the USA, something that has been important to Red Ants Pants since the beginning and something we're proud to continue offering to customers who value domestic manufacturing. We also believe in being transparent about what that means. Making work pants entirely in the United States is expensive. Domestic manufacturing and labor costs contribute to the higher price of our OWPs. Add heavyweight 12 oz cotton canvas, double-front construction, reinforced seams, functional details, and a product designed for years rather than a season of wear, and the Original Work Pants are an investment upfront. We understand that USA-made workwear isn't going to be the right priority or price point for every customer. That's okay. For women who specifically want a USA-made option and value the construction and longevity that go into the OWPs, we're proud to keep making one. Are Double Knee Work Pants Worth It? Here's the simplest answer: If you keep wearing holes through the knees of your work pants, probably. Double-front construction isn't there because it looks "workwear." It's there because work pants should be designed around where work actually wears them out. That's really the philosophy behind the entire Original Work Pant. The 12 oz canvas has a purpose. The double front has a purpose. The reinforced seams have a purpose. The gusset has a purpose. The deep pockets have a purpose. The Straight and Curvy fits have a purpose. Twenty years ago, Sarah wasn't trying to create a fashion version of men's workwear. She was trying to build the pair of women's work pants she couldn't find. Durable enough for the work. Not all workdays look the same. And neither should all work pants. Some days call for heavyweight canvas that can take a serious beating. Others call for something lighter, cooler, and a little stretchier. That’s exactly why we offer two different styles of women’s work pants: our Original Work Pants (OWPs) and our GSD (Get Stuff Done) Pants. Both were designed with working women in mind, and both offer functional pockets, reinforced construction, multiple fit and inseam options, and plenty of room to move. But they were built for different kinds of days. So, OWPs or GSDs? Here’s how to decide. Choose the Original Work Pants If Durability Is Your #1 Priority Our Original Work Pants are exactly that: the pants that started it all. Made in the USA from 12 oz, 100% cotton canvas (which is grown and milled right here in the USA), these are our toughest women’s work pants. They feature double-front construction, reinforced seams, deep functional pockets, and a gusseted crotch that gives you room to bend, squat, climb, and move aka keep you comfortable. The heavyweight cotton canvas is especially well suited for demanding work where your clothing takes some abuse. Think ranching, farming, construction, landscaping, trail work, woodworking, gardening, and long days spent outside. One thing to know about 100% cotton canvas: your OWPs are meant to be broken in.  They’ll feel structured when you first pull them out of the package and will shrink approximately 3–5% with washing, which we account for in our sizing. As you wash and wear them, the canvas begins to soften and conform to you. These aren't pants designed to feel worn-in on day one. They're pants designed to become worn-in after years of use. Choose the OWPs if you want: Our heaviest-duty work pant 12 oz, 100% cotton canvas Double-front construction Maximum durability A structured pant that breaks in with wear USA-made workwear Pants built for demanding, high-wear jobs One more important difference to know about our OWPs: they’re made in the USA. Keeping our OWPs made here at home is something that has been important to Red Ants Pants from the beginning, and we’re proud to continue offering a USA-made option for customers who value having something locally made. We also want to be transparent about what that means for price. Making pants entirely in the USA is expensive. Domestic labor and manufacturing costs are higher, and that is reflected in the price of our OWPs. Pair that with heavyweight 12 oz cotton canvas and construction designed for years of wear, and these pants are an investment upfront (but one that is worth it). For some women, buying USA-made workwear is a priority and worth that additional cost. For others, price is a bigger factor and we understand that, too. In fact, that’s part of why we’re so excited to offer the GSDs as another option. Which brings us to our second option: OUR GET SHIT DONE PANTS !!!  Choose the GSD Pants If You Want Something Lighter With Stretch Sometimes you don't need your heaviest work pants. You need something that can move. Enter the GSDs: Get Shit Done Pants (or “stuff” if you prefer). The GSDs are made from 10 oz canvas with 98% cotton and 2% spandex, giving you a lighter work pant with a little stretch built in. That makes them a great choice for warmer weather, long days with lots of movement, or women who simply prefer a softer, more flexible work pant. They still have the things we refuse to compromise on: deep functional pockets, reinforced seams, thoughtful fit, and construction designed for women who actually work in their clothes. What they don't have is the double-front knee of the OWPs. That helps make the GSD a lighter alternative when you don't need quite as much reinforcement. They're also currently available in Olive and Wine, giving you a little more color than our iconic brown OWPs. Choose the GSDs if you want: A lighter-weight women's work pant 10 oz canvas 2% stretch for easier movement A good option for warmer weather A more flexible feel Single-front construction Color options Work pants that easily transition beyond the workday OWP vs. GSD: What's the Biggest Difference? The easiest way to think about it is this: OWP = maximum durability and reinforcement. GSD = lighter weight and more flexibility. If you're hard on the knees of your pants, regularly working around rough materials, or simply want the most durable pair we make, we'd steer you toward the OWPs. If your work involves plenty of movement, you're working in warmer conditions, or you prefer a little stretch in your clothing, we'd start with the GSDs. And for a lot of women, the answer might eventually be both. Your heavyweight OWPs can handle the days when you need maximum durability, while your GSDs become the pair you grab when it's hot outside or you want something lighter and stretchier. Both Are Actually Designed for Women's Bodies Whichever fabric you choose, you shouldn't have to settle when it comes to fit. Both our OWPs and GSDs are available in Straight and Curvy fits, because women aren't all built the same. Our Straight Fit provides a more uniform fit through the hips and thighs and works well for women who don't typically experience waistband gapping. Our Curvy Fit provides more room through the hips and seat with a closer fit at the waist and can be a better option if you've experienced that dreaded waistband gap in other pants. Both styles are also offered in three inseam lengths: Short (30–31"), Regular (32–33"), and Long (34–35"), with sizing options designed to fit a wide range of women's bodies. Before You Pick, Grab a Measuring Tape Whichever pant you choose, please don’t guess your size or automatically order the size you typically wear in another brand. Women’s sizing varies significantly from brand to brand, and our OWPs and GSDs have their own fit and sizing specifications. We strongly recommend taking a few minutes to take your current measurements and complete our Fit Finder quiz. Even if you think you know your size, fresh measurements matter. The Fit Finder uses those measurements along with information about your body shape and fit preferences to help determine not only your RAP size, but whether Straight or Curvy is likely to work best for your body. This is especially important with our 100% cotton canvas OWPs, which are intentionally sized to account for the shrinkage that happens during the first wash. A brand-new pair may not fit exactly the way you expect straight out of the package, and that's by design. So, Which Women's Work Pants Should You Buy? Start with your actual workday. Choose the Original Work Pants when durability, reinforcement, and longevity are at the top of your list. Choose the GSD Pants when you want lightweight women's work pants with stretch, flexibility, and a little more versatility. Neither is meant to be the "better" work pant. They're two answers to something we've understood since Red Ants Pants began 20 years ago: Women do all kinds of work. We shouldn't expect one pair of pants to do it all. And we definitely shouldn't expect women to make men's work pants work for us.
